Here is a winter update from the gallery.
I have altered the gallery hours just a bit. I will be closing at 5pm on Friday and Saturday, instead of 6pm. But never hesitate to contact me if you need me to come in earlier or stay later one day.
In addition – The storefront gallery will be closed from February 5th through February 18th. Except by chance or appointment. I hope to do some repair, repainting and rehanging of the space. Of course, you can always contact me online and I will still be happy to facilitate any purchase that you would like to make during that time. And again, contact me of you would like to meet me in that gallery on a specific day, even during this time.

December 3, 2017
4 years ago today, I hung 3 paintings by Linda Shantz in a studio space that I had of my own work. And that was the beginning of what would be come the Equis Art Gallery.
There is a bit more to the story……of the beginning of this most wonderful business. As I said, I had a public studio space that I was using to show my own photographic work of horses. But in February of that year 2013, a large tumor was found on one of my ovaries. And that started a year of major surgery, recovery and cancer treatments that prevented me from being able to go out and create any new photographs. I had not the physical stamina nor the emotion stability to spend time out in the presence of horses.
Linda had left 3 of her paintings with me to be picked up by her at a later date. But since by December it looked like it would not be until the following year that I would see her and since I had no new work of my own to exhibit, I asked her if I could hang her paintings to try to sell them for her. To which she graciously agreed and I sold one right away.
By the turn of the new year, feeling much stronger by then, I decided to ask other painter / sculptor friends if they would ship artwork to me that I could try to sell. And thanks to their incredible generosity and trust….they agreed!
It amazes me still that this germ of an idea has grown in to such a special business.
From the start I saw the gallery as a way to give back to those who supported me through that horrible 2013. To the artists that carried me in thought and conversation. Who were there on my darkest days to listen to me cry and rant. To the community in which I live, who feed us and helped us with our every day needs. The community that smiled at my bald head and gave as many hugs as I needed. We needed.
If I have become a success in this business, it is not measured in money earned by me. It is the support of the artists with commission payments each month. And the people who come to visit this unique gallery, who find accommodations, who shop and dine out in my community to the benefit of those others who have businesses here.
So, to the collectors who have purchased from the gallery over these past 4 years, I can’t thank you enough for being a part of this path. This path that has led not only to my own remission and recovery…..but that has enabled me to live my vision of a gallery dedicated to contemporary equine artists and to my Red Hook friends and neighbors. It was my idea, but you are the ones that have made it a success.

Special Exhibition – August 24th – September 11th
The Equis Art Gallery is pleased to feature the artwork of Red Hook artists, Daniel Baxter and Jean DiMarco for a 3 week exhibit beginning Wed. August 24th including the Labor Day ART STUDIO VIEWS Tour weekend. and closing Sunday, Sept 11th.
Daniel Baxter is an award-winning illustrator residing in Red Hook, N.Y. With this background, his personal work is rooted in drawing. His goal is to repurpose common objects which we see everyday, and add extra value to their meaning. He turns everything from maps, game-boards, fabric, lottery tickets, food packaging, train schedules and placemats into canvases. These uncommon canvases act as launching points for meditations about our society.
Jean M. DiMarco has been creating custom design stainglass windows in the Hudson Valle for close to 25 years. Her inspiration is from nature, beauty, form and flow, particularly by using color variation and textures in the stain glass to reflect movement and feeling.
Come join us in celebrating both of these wonderful artists at a RECEPTION on Saturday, September 3rd from 5-7pm.

This 18th Century Horse Bit was dug out of the soil on a farm in Milan, New York. It was encrusted with dirt and rust. It is a handmade iron bit, probably used on an expensive, well trained riding horse. It would have originally come from Poland and is modeled after bits from the Turkish or Tatar cultures of that time. Whoever owned this was a wealthy landowner or British officer.
I have offered to donate the bit, auction style, to Historic Red Hook. Final bid amount and the bit itself will be donated to the organization. Bidding end the end of November 2015.
CURRENT HIGH BID – $75.00 Contact to place a bid – Juliet Harrison at firstname.lastname@example.org or by coming to the Equis Art Gallery at 15 West Market St, Red Hook. Open Wed – Sunday.
